The Belgian standard for controlling risks during interventions on electrically driven vehicles. For employers, prevention advisors, workshop leaders and technicians who need to know which role may do which work.

HEVHEV-01 · Level 1 - sensitised employee

HEV level 1 - high-voltage awareness

For everyone who works on hybrid and electric vehicles but never on the high-voltage system or its components, and who performs no risky work near it. Mechanics, technicians, bodyshop repairers, reception and logistics.

General working principles of hybrid and electric vehicles
Recognising an HEV, PHEV, BEV or FCEV and its high-voltage components
The main risks linked to the drive system components
What a sensitised employee may and may not do, and the scope of each certified level
Daily handling: starting, driving, parking and moving an EV safely
Assessing the risks of working on a damaged vehicle

HEVHEV-02 · Level 2 - qualified employee

HEV level 2 - de-energizing and service work

For technicians who work on the high-voltage system or its components after the vehicle has been correctly de-energised and secured. Accents differ per activity domain: garage, heavy duty or bodyshop.

Selecting and using personal protective equipment and suitable measuring devices
Safe de-energising and re-energising, step by step per brand and service plug

HEVHEV-03 · Level 3 - specialised employee

HEV level 3 - diagnostics and work on live systems

For diagnostic technicians who have to work on a live high-voltage circuit or live parts of it, such as the inside of a battery pack, using an approved workshop procedure.

Format: Workshop-based and case-driven, closing with a theory and practical test

HEVHEV-04 · Level 4 - risk expert

HEV level 4 - battery pack expert and work leader

For the specialist who carries out an independent risk analysis when the manufacturer has no procedure: a heavy accident, a fire, a flooded vehicle or a damaged battery pack. The level 4 expert writes the safety procedure a level 3 or level 4 technician then works with.

NBN R 03-001:2021: a certificate is not a safety system

HEV certificates prove that a person completed a programme. NBN R 03-001:2021 starts from the work, the risk and the responsibilities inside your organisation. That is a different question, and it is the employer's question.

Outside the paritair comité, and the 1 November deadline

Sectoral HEV certification is organised per joint committee. Plenty of people who work on or around electric vehicles fall outside it. Here is how to cover them, and what to put in your annual action plan before 1 November.

Practical questions, answered.

Can you deliver this in-company?: Yes. Most NBN and HEV trainings run at the client's own workshop or academy, on your vehicles and with your procedures.
Which language do you train in?: Dutch, French and English as standard. Other languages on request for international rollouts.
Do participants receive proof of participation?: Yes. For the HEV levels the sectoral certificate follows a theory and, from level 2, a practical test, and it is valid for six years.
What group size do you recommend?: Six to twelve participants for classroom levels. Levels 3 and 4 run with a maximum of six people, so everyone gets vehicle time during the assessment.
Can you adapt the content to our brand procedures?: Yes. We align the de-energizing procedures, tooling and documentation with your brand standard before the first session.
How fast can a session be scheduled?: In-company sessions typically start within four to six weeks. Open sessions at Aartselaar run monthly per level.
